Trio fluido Helmut Lachenmann; Gregory Oakes; Matthew Coley; Jonathan Sturm. 3. Allegro sostenuto Helmut Lachenmann; Gregory Oakes; Mei-Hsuan Huang; George Work. Total Playing Time 60:06. Gregory Oakes records the complete chamber works for clarinet of eminent figure of contemporary composition, Helmut Lachenmann. From the otherworldly sounds growing from the silence of opening number Dal Niente to the rarely heard Trio Fluido for clarinet, viola and percussion, this release surveys the imaginative and landscape shifting compositional style of Lachenmann.

Gregory Oakes is an assistant professor of clarinet at Iowa State and the principal clarinet for the Des Moines Symphony. He focuses his attention on music written by living composers rather than what most people consider classical music. In Aesthetic Apparatus, clarinetist Gregory Oakes has compiled three substantial chamber works by Lachenmann. The first, Dal Niente, for solo clarinet, is an extension of silence into a variety of soundscapes. Oakes conveys conviction that all the sounds he generates belong in a congruent whole, and with more hearings I’m certain I’d agree. Martha Ellen Tye Recital Hall George Tsontakis: Eclipse.

Contemporary and avant-garde clarinet soloist Gregory Oakes performs pieces that blend modern and non-Western music. Some of the most challenging music of recent years-challenging to play as well as to listen to-has been written by German composer Helmut Lachenmann (b. 1935). The conceptual core of much of his music has consisted in laying bare the conditions underlying and assumed by music ly, the physical prerequisites of performance practice, as well as the determinations, both accepted and rejected, of genre.

Helmut Friedrich Lachenmann (born 27 November 1935) is a German composer of contemporary classical music. His work has been associated with "instrumental musique concrète". Lachenmann was born in Stuttgart and after the end of the Second World War (when he was 11) started singing in his local church choir. Showing an early aptitude for music, he was already composing in his teens.

Listening to the music of Helmut Lachenmann, one hears instruments creating sounds that may not exist in the sound palette of any other composer. That’s because Lachenmann created many of these sounds and techniques specifically for the pieces in which they appear. This practice, which he calls Musique.
