Conceived (and everything this lady does is rigorously conceived) as an album of one long track that flows like a river with no part being heard twice, always flowing by with something new, this is another remarkable album from a remarkable woman. Lyrically it's as complex and thought-provoking as one would expect from Sadier, yet the differences between Monade and her music with Stereolab are perhaps not so marked as to demonstrate why she really needs a side project. But then, who cares whether this is the main course or just the side-dish when it is as filling and satisfactory as this?

But after listening to Monade's 2005 album A Few Steps More, it gets a bit perplexing when you hear how much a band containing precisely one member of Stereolab sounds so much like their parent group, right down to the motorik beats and the way the guitars and electric pianos create that familiar harmonic drone  . Sadier has stated that Monstre Cosmic is thematically held together by an abstract conceptual notion of how light and shade interact. If it doesn't always come through clearly in the lyrics (which, per usual, are in French half the time), it does seep through in a compositional sense.

Monade is Stereolab singer Laetitia Sadier's solo outlet, though both projects reside in the same space-age lounge.
