Schumann - Angela Hewitt - Davidsbündlertänze • Kinderszenen • Sonata In G Minor album FLAC
Angela Hewitt's previous Schumann disc for Hyperion, released three years ago, coupled the first of his piano sonatas, in F sharp minor, with the Humoresque.
Schumann: Piano Sonata In G Minor, Op. 22 - 4. Rondo: Presto. Angela Hewitt has earned a richly deserved reputation for her interpretations of Bach and the Baroque, and something of that characteristic clarity illuminates her Schumann performances
Angela Hewitt has been recognised less for her efforts in the mainstream German Romantic repertory than for her Bach and Ravel, but this CD may well change that. Her awareness of counterpoint and her skill at putting it across suits Schumann’s colourfully woven textures to perfection. Composer(s): Schumann. Works: Piano Sonata No. 2 in G minor; Davidsbündlertänze; Kinderszenen. Performer: Angela Hewitt (piano).
Here from Angela Hewitt comes a disc to make us marvel anew at Schumann's Romanticism; at his troubled and ecstatic poetry. Everything is played as in the heat of first inspiration, a reflection, perhaps, of a recreative richness mirroring Hewitt's encompassing and versatile repertoire. Hewitt projects the varying moods very well. Of his three piano sonatas, the G minor is by far the most concise. It is a work of great sweep and passion, typically combining dramatic urgency with moments of rapt tenderness. Schumann doesn’t wait to get our attention-he demands it in the first bar with that sudden, broken G minor chord.
On the set, Schumann wrote: "The titles for pieces of music, since they again have come into favor in our day, have been censured here and there, and it has been said that 'good music needs no sign-post. Certainly not, but neither does a title rob it of its value; and the composer, by adding one, at least prevents a complete misunderstanding of the character of his music. Jagdlied (Hunting Song). Sonata No. 2 in G minor, Op. 22. 3 in F minor, Op. 14 "Concerto without orchestra". List of solo piano compositions by Robert Schumann.
Dame Mitsuko Uchida, universally acknowledged as one of the world’s foremost Schumann interpreters, follows her last album of the composer’s music (Davidsbündlertänze and Fantasie in C) with another sublime Schumann programme. Uchida’s latest Decca recording brings together the romantic fire and intensity of the Piano Sonata No. 2 in G minor Op. 22 with two remarkable works from Schumann’s final years, Waldszenen and the Gesänge der Frühe. Her album’s repertoire explores music created by an artist burdened by deep depression and mental illness.
Angela Hewitt possesses all of these and gives immensely polished performances of three jewels from the mid-1830s. There’s Kinderszenen, infinitely touching; the Davidsbündlertänze, alternately pensive and impetuous; and the turbulent third piano sonata. Occasionally Hewitt massages the notes too much, but her mannerisms never become barnacles in these works.
