Sonny Smith is a sonic madman. His 100 Records series sees him playing the role of different bands that he created in his own head and put into the recording studio with their own sounds ranging from lo-fi blues-rock, to Elvis Costello, to country-folk. As a result, 100 Records: Vol. 3 functions less as a coherent album than as a collection of sheer creativity on one disc. Some of it is brilliant, with Fruitcakes being a raucous fun track. Others simply fall flat. But that’s the result you will get when the album acts as a sampler disc of bands from one man’s mind
