The Maidenhair Tree (Ginkgo biloba) is the only surviving species of a very ancient plant lineage, whose natural distribution is now restricted to a few parts of China. We grow several throughout the Garden. The elegant fan-shaped leaves, dangling from an elongated thread, turn bright buttery yellow in autumn and are used to great effect in combination with the crimson foliage of Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki’ in the Autumn Garden. The stiff habit of the branches makes the Maidenhair an ideal and unusual candidate for training against a wall, a lovely example of which you can find on the north wall of the listed arts and craft building in the centre of the Garden, Cory Lodge. This treatment pays homage to two outstanding, espaliered Maidenhairs that were planted against the New Botany School (now the Department of Plant Sciences off Downing Street) when it opened in 1904.
The Maidenhair Tree is botanically called Ginkgo biloba. The Tree is a deciduous tree, it will be up to 25 m (82 ft) high. The leaves are fan-shaped and the flowers are yellow-greenish. Ginkgo biloba is a rarity in the plant kingdom and the only surviving species of the Maidenhair Tree tree family. The plant was discovered in 1690 by the botanist E. Kaempfer in Japan. Today Maidenhair Tree is distributed worldwide. In East Asia, Ginkgo biloba is cultivated as a temple tree and is also prized for its edible seeds. Maidenhair Tree trees can reach an age of up to 1,000 years and have been declared the tree of the millennium. In young trees, a straight and slender growth habit can be observed. The pyramid-shaped trees have little branches at a young age.
