The album was produced entirely by Prince and released on September 26, 1995, by NPG Records and Warner Bros. The album charted at number 6 on the Billboard 200 and number 2 on the Top R&B Albums.

Prince is the self-titled second studio album by American recording artist Prince. It was released on October 19, 1979 by Warner Bros. The album was written, arranged, composed, produced and performed entirely by Prince. Prince peaked at 22 on the US Billboard 200 and 3 on the US Billboard Top R&B Albums. Album: The Gold Experience. Prince (as ) also toured heavily in 1994-5 (mostly in one-off shows, but also on The Ultimate Live Experience), focusing heavily on playing tracks from the album. Between the promotional singles and Prince's live performances of the songs, many fans were very familiar with a lot of the material before the album's release. At the time of release, however, it seemed that Prince himself had moved on to other projects, and he didn't promote the album much upon release. The album reached number 6 on The Billboard 200 Chart, and number 2 on the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart

During those two years, he released a greatest-hits collection, an official version of his much-bootlegged Black Album, and a final Prince album, the lackluster Come. Throughout 1994, he pressured Warner to release another album, The Gold Experience, but the company refused and he staged a public protest in the media, calling himself a slave to the label. By the summer of 1995, the artist and the company had made amends and the record was released in the fall. In a way, The Gold Experience lives up to the manufactured hype created while it languished on the shelf.
