Boston is the debut studio album by American rock band Boston. Produced by Tom Scholz and John Boylan, the album was released on August 25, 1976, in the United States by Epic Records. Scholz had studied classical piano in his childhood and became involved in the Boston music scene in the late 1960s.
The early records remain some of the most unapologetic, uncompromising sounds ever recorded. With the addition of Jarboe on vocals and keys –- she was the only other constant from ’84-’97 –- structures began to shift, songs coalesced into singable, hummable things, and Swans burst outward in a cruel bloom of contradictory sounds. Before long, each passing record took on a new persona, and each shift saw the band’s vision grow exponentially in texture and scope . Swans was never much of a money-making venture in its day, but the cult of fans grew substantially over the years. In 2010, Gira shook out the dust and revived the name for a reunion album. Just two months ago, Swans released a massive, double-disc follow-up titled The Seer. Musically and artistically, they’re as strong as ever, with brimstone and ecstatic energy to spare.

Nearly every song on Boston's debut album could still be heard on classic rock radio decades later due to the strong vocals of Brad Delp and unique guitar sound of Tom Scholz. Tom Scholz, who wrote most of the songs, was a studio wizard and used self-designed equipment such as 12-track recording devices to come up with an anthemic "arena rock" sound before the term was even coined. The sound was hard rock, but the layered melodies and harmonics reveal the work of a master craftsman. While much has been written about the sound of the album, the lyrics are often overlooked.
