David Bowie is the self-titled debut studio album by English musician David Bowie, released on 1 June 1967, on Deram Records. Its style and content bears little overt resemblance to the type of music that he was later known for, such as the folk rock influenced "Space Oddity" or the glam rock of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
David Bowie was rock’s foremost futurist and a genre-bending pioneer, chameleon and transformer. Throughout his solo career and in his alliances with other artists-including Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Brian Eno and Nine Inch Nails-Bowie has positioned himself on the cutting edge of rock and roll. His innovations created or furthered several major trends in rock and roll, including glam-rock, art-rock and the very notion of the self-mythologized, larger-than-life rock star. On the strength of such early albums as Man of Words/Man of Music (1969) and The Man Who Sold the World (1970), Bowie became a cult figure to rock fans looking for something new and challenging to fill the post-Sixties void. A driven, polymorphic artist who breaks all the molds, Bowie has attracted attention from the beginning for his frequent, fascinating changes of guise and the high quality of his unpredictable music.
9 The failure of his eponymous debut album – a Swinging London affair that mixed pop, music hall and psychedelia – and its novelty single The Laughing Gnome in 1967 – prompted the newly renamed David Bowie to follow art rather than populism. Enrolling in Lindsay Kemp’s London Dance Centre, he began to explore mime, commedia dell’arte and his sexuality (the two were probably lovers). When Bowie returned to music in 1969 it was as an avant-garde folk flower child. David Bowie began writing the music on Hunky Dory on his first visit to America in 1971. The whole Hunky Dory album reflected my newfound enthusiasm for this new continent that had been opened up to me," Bowie said in 1999.
