Reviews about Liz Phair - Funstyle (2):
Savaged by a lot of critics, especially younger Pitchfork-esque writers who found it profoundly uncool. It has some rough edges, but it's far more interesting than the two prior albums, both the industry's idea of what a Liz Phair album should sound like. There's a direct DNA link from the Girly Sound tapes to Funstyle (why they were wisely paired on the CD version of this)...not sure why the reaction was so negative, but it's very much worth a listen.
I love Mercedes
Now that it's 2018 and the what is considered popular is horribly bad the once that was called the industry was turning into a cold corporation. Liz Phair came from a era that was the last of just hope called the 1990's or some of it seem to be new and interesting from the sterile 1980's. Liz made her last excellent album that was called White Chocolate Space Egg. 5 years later the whole industry changed before her eyes. And I can't imagine what she was witnessing. But things just shifted from a indie rock to commercial pop and 2003 was the year technology was changing and enhancing, Many of the a young woman artists at the time were younger than Liz but they warned Liz if she wanted to continue 10 years after her debut she was going to be completely controlled by capitol records and management I'm guessing with a dash of Liz.. And as others from her era were gone or struggling with their independence and really underground at thus point. Liz went and tried to be commercial in Liz fashion. And basically failed. And after two albums she was thrown off Capitol and label less. But at least she was free as the industry became more and more disgusting which has not only become the current industry but there's no change in sight. Like robotic talent less sluts. But Liz years later now in her 50's she is free to do what she wants and sell out most of her concerts. She even made fun of the whole scene and future on her last non labeled CD called Fun Style. Poking fun of the whole thing. But that was 2010. Who knows if she will ever make another album. But now there are no real labels. So Liz won wirh her own success she can do any damn thing she wants now. And not be controlled by not one single person except maybe Brad Wood ( that's a good thing ) While the dribbling revolving dribbling one after another cookie cutters get lost in the shuffle.with absolutely no legacy just to be used till they dry up and get replaced.. Liz Phair and her 1990's colleagues came out as LEGENDS CONQUERED AND KICKED THEIR ASS.. Thank You for reading.
