It was the first Stranglers album to feature acoustic guitars, and it was on this album that Jet Black began to use electronic drum kits. Hugh Cornwell stated, "On La Folie there were three tracks – 'Golden Brown'. La Folie' and 'How to Find True Love and Happiness in the Present Day' – that sort of pointed us away from what we had been doing. This was their first album to feature the three-piece horn-section which was retained in all their subsequent albums and live performances until Hugh Cornwell's departure in 1990. Aural Sculpture was only a moderate success in the UK album charts, peaking at N. 4 in November 1984. In 2005, Coast to Coast: Live on Tour was released, the live album contained songs recorded during their tour the previous year. On their sellout UK tour they were supported by Goldblade.

Produced by Steve Churchyard. Golden brown, texture like sun Lays me down, with my mind she runs Throughout the night, no need to fight Never a frown with golden brown. Singer and lyricist Hugh Cornwell said in 2001: It’s about heroin and also about a gir. oth provided me with pleasurable times. The instrumentation is quite unconventional for what is notionally a punk record, featuring a harpsichord very prominently. Dave Greenfield’s keyboard plays in ¾ time, but his harpsicord part has twice as many beats in 6/8 time. Additionally, every fourth bar switches to 4/4 time. Thanks to being chosen as BBC Radio 2’s record of the week, Golden Brown peaked at a chart high for The Stranglers, behind Town Called Malice by The Jam. Today, it is probably the band’s most famous song. Can you waltz to it? Not easily!

Biography by Dave Thompson. Friday the Thirteenth: Live at the Royal Albert Hall.

Centre, Brighton with Alice Cooper. We are saddened to hear of the recent passing of trombonist Chris Lawrence at the age of 57. Chris was a permanent fixture in the band’s brass section, alongside Alex Gifford, playing on the studio albums from Aural Sculpture to 10 and appearing live onstage with the band throughout the period 1984-1990. Fly straight Chris, fond adieu x. (thanks to Stewart Ivory for the info).
