After a seven-year "vacation," The Modern Jazz Quartet came back together in 1981 for a special reunion that ended up beginning another 14 plus years of playing together on at least a part-time basis. It is somehow fitting that on this Pablo LP (which has music taken from a Japanese concert) seven of the eight selections (all but John Lewiss' "Odds Against Tomorrow") were remakes of songs that The MJQ had played in 1974 at their Last Concert

Conrad Henry Kirnon (April 27, 1927 – November 30, 1994) known professionally as Connie Kay, was an American jazz and R&B drummer who was a member of the Modern Jazz Quartet. Self-taught on drums, he began performing in Los Angeles in the mid-1940s. His drumming is recorded in The Hunt, the recording of a famous Los Angeles jam session featuring the dueling tenors of Dexter Gordon and Wardell Gray on July 6, 1947. The Budokan was the location where many Live at the Budokan albums were recorded, including those of Bob Dylan, Cheap Trick, Dream Theater and Ozzy Osbourne. The Nippon Budokan, however, was built for the judo competition in the 1964 Summer Olympics, hence its name. The Nippon Budokan is located in Kitanomaru Park in the center of Tokyo and this 42 m high imposing octagonal structure holds 14,471 people. The building is modeled after Yumedono in Hōryū-ji in Nara, though it still functions as a venue for big musical events, its primary purpose is for Japanese martial arts.
