Chesney Henry Baker Jr. (December 23, 1929 – May 13, 1988) was an American jazz trumpeter and vocalist. Baker earned much attention and critical praise through the 1950s, particularly for albums featuring his vocals (Chet Baker Sings, It Could Happen to You). Jazz historian Dave Gelly described the promise of Baker's early career as "James Dean, Sinatra, and Bix, rolled into on. His well-publicized drug habit also drove his notoriety and fame.
Chet Baker collaborated with Elvis Costello on a few occasions. In 1983, he played trumpet on Costello's song 'Shipbuilding' and three years later, he re-joined Costello and Van Morrison at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London. On 19 May 1988 the album 'Bespoke Songs, Lost Dogs, Detours & Rendezvous', a tribute album to Costello, was released. On the album Chet Baker sang a version of 'Almost Blue'. Costello said: "It comes from the album Chet Baker In Tokyo, recorded in 1987, and it finds Chet much more at ease with the tune
