archiv für ton und nichtton (usually known as Raster-Noton) is an electronic music label based in Germany. It resulted from the fusion of two previous labels (Rastermusic and noton. archiv für ton und nichtton) in the last months of 1999. Rastermusic was founded by Olaf Bender and Frank Bretschneider in 1996. archiv für ton und nichtton was founded by Carsten Nicolai in 1996 as a platform for conceptual and experimental projects in music, art, and science. It began publishing the (still ongoing) clear series, and later developed the idea for a conceptual CD magazine. This became the 20' To 2000 series released in 1999 and 2000. Following recent 20th anniversary celebrations, the founders announced in 2017 that the Raster-Noton label will be restructured. As a matter of fact, the company has split in two: Olaf Bender will run Raster (2), which will handle Music's.

Quietly, the German Raster-Noton collective released a wealth of relatively minimal glitch throughout the late '90s and into the next decade, some of the best of which is compiled by the label on Archiv ., the perfect starting point for those in need of an introductory overview

Raster-Noton was a German electronic music record label established in 1999. Based in Chemnitz, Germany, it emerged from the fusion of Rastermusik, founded by Olaf Bender and Frank Bretschneider in 1996, and Noton (Archiv für Ton und Nichtton), a sublabel which was run by Carsten Nicolai. In 2017, the label has split up back into two distinct entities: Raster, which would continue to be run by Bender and Noton, focusing on Nicolai's output.

The common idea behind all releases is an experimental approach - an amalgamation of sound, art and design, which is not only apparent in the music, but also visible from the artwork and cover design.

Reviews about Various - A1. Raster-Noton. Archiv 1 (1):
Beranyle
Blurring the boundaries between conceptual sound art and electronic music, Raster-Noton and The Wire offer up here one of the best free CDs that I could ever have hoped for. Cyclic clicks, grainy textures and a distinct feel of the arctic tundra pervade this collection of compositions by artists who venture down the avenues of minimalism and digital experimentaion. Brief soirees into rhythmic pastures akin to Stefan Betke's ~scape imprint are superseded by moments of crystal abstraction, where emphasis is on space and fluidity. And the label's aesthetics don't stop there. The packaging reflects Raster-Noton's elegant approach to design; with a transparent bag to house the transparent CD - perfect.
