Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone, Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone, Silence the pianos and with muffled drum Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come. Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead, Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves, Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves. He was my North, my South, my East and West, My working week and my Sunday rest, My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song; I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong
An addendum rather than a full follow-up to So, You Got Anything Else?, The Black Lights compiles remixes from that earlier album along with a variety of new tracks. Kirk Lake's general practice of working with a variety of different acts for his musical backing holds here, and his delivery and wry, strange, and sometimes seamy tales again come to intriguing life as a result.
H. Auden’s poem ‘Stop all the clocks’ – poem number IX in his Twelve Songs, and also sometimes known as ‘Funeral Blues’ – is a poem so famous and universally understood that perhaps it is unnecessary to offer much in the way of textual analysis
The poet calls for the clocks to be stopped, the telephone to be cut off, and the dog and pianos silenced. The coffin will be brought out to the mourners with a muffled drum and under the moan of airplanes that spell out the message, He Is Dead. Doves are to be decked with bows around their necks, and the traffic policemen are to wear black cotton gloves. It is also sometimes referred to as Funeral Blues (Stop All the Clocks) due to its famous first line. It is perhaps most famous for its delivery by a character in the English comedy/drama Four Weddings and a Funeral, in which a character mourns his dead lover. The poem in the format readers usually see it today is a dirge, or a lament for the dead.
