in,ter a,li,a ‎(CD, Album, Dig). Rise Records (3), BMG, Hostess Entertainment Unlimited. It's not an At The Drive In album, and how could it be? they ceased to exist nearly 20 years ago, and is much closer to the Antemasque album but with a harder edge. Just put it on, shout the choruses and be glad they're all still making the music.

The discography of At the Drive-In, an El Paso, Texas-based post-hardcore band active from 1994 to 2001, consists of four studio albums, one compilation album, five EPs, six singles, and three music videos. At the Drive-In formed in 1994 with an initial lineup of Cedric Bixler-Zavala (lead vocals), Jim Ward (guitar and backing vocals), Jarrett Wrenn (guitar), Kenny Hopper (bass guitar), and Bernie Rincon (drums).

At the Drive In have found themselves in an uncannily similar position as Swedish outfit Refused. Both are extremely revered post-hardcore acts who teetered on the brink of mainstream popularity at the dawn of the new millennia with albums that have since been considered landmarks of the genre; for Refused, it was 1998’s The Shape of Punk to Come and for ATDI, it was 2000’s Relationship Command. Each effort featured respective anthems - New Noise on the former, One Armed Scissor on the latter. Much like Refused and their comeback album Freedom, At the Drive In’s in,ter a,li,a is sure to be polarizing in terms of fans' reception. It'll be considered either too nostalgic or not pushing the envelope into uncharted territory sufficiently, coming down to preference at the end of the day.

Perhaps most significantly, ‘in,ter a,li,a’ feels like an ATDI album, which is no small achievement – just ask The Stone Roses, who’ve thus far struggled to rediscover their mojo after a similarlength of time away. All of a sudden, At The Drive In’s reason for being has become thrillingly self-evident: they’re back to finish what they started. Release Date: May 5, 2017 Record Label: Rise Records.

So in,ter a,li,a is met with the question of whether or not ATDI can save rock music from its perceived last right. gain. It’s unlikely, even if the album’s more than a solid effort. Like all things ATDI, in,ter a,li,a is complicated. List: At the Drive In’s Top 10 Songs). No, in,ter a,li,a isn’t quite the prog punk spectacle of its predecessor, but that could be a good thing. If you recall, the band already fell victim to its own explosive ambitions, and it’s why we’ve had to talk about them in the past tense for so long. That’s not their narrative anymore, and with i. er. a, fans should take solace in discovering an older and wiser incarnation of At the Drive In.

After a pseudo-reunion in 2012 and then reuniting again without Ward in 2015 (with former Sparta guitarist Keeley Davis taking his spot), At The Drive-In released their first album in 17 years with in, ter a, li, a on May 5, 2017 off of Rise Records. It’s a sonic shredder that’s intense and never lets up. There’s also a sense of influence from Rodriguez-Lopez’s and Bixler-Zavala’s other acts like The Mars Volta and Antemasque. Rich Costey on production duties created a clear, poignant and raw sound. The music itself is rhythmically tight and achieving structural perfection

But, the difference between in,ter a,li,a and other comeback albums is that, even if it doesn't appeal to everyone, it has a clear message: they're having fun again. From the gargantuan riffs of No Wolf Like The Present until the controlled chaos of Hostage Stamps, the band sound like it never missed a beat. Considering that in the early years their live shows and albums were cocaine-fueled freakout fests, and these days they're clean from drugs, they still sound fine, even if a little less psychotic. And if you're coming to a new At the Drive-In LP in 2017 expecting a sequel to Arcarsenal or One Armed Scissor, you may be slightly disappointed. But if you don't, you'll find a consistent album of a band sticking to their guns, and doing it well. Maintaining what they started on Antemasque, Omar and Cedric haven't sounded that inspired and joyous at the same time for almost a decade.
