And wounded anger is shot through her new album, Bedtime Stories, as she works out survival strategies. While always a feminist more by example than by word or deed, Madonna seems genuinely shocked at the hypocritical prudishness of her former fans, leading one to expect a set of biting screeds. But instead of reveling in raised consciousness, Bedtime Stories demonstrates a desire to get unconscious. Madonna still wants to go to bed, but this time it’s to pull the covers over her head. Still, in so doing, Madonna has come up with some awfully compelling sounds.
And yet, Bedtime Stories is one of her greatest albums. It might, actually, be the best. It’s not just that Bedtime Stories is one of Madonna’s best-aging efforts, or that it’s one of her most forward-thinking - it stands as one of her greatest moments of defiance, and (yet again) challenges the notion of what Madonna could do, and say, and be as a pop star.
Bedtime Stories is the sixth studio album by Madonna. The album is less sexually-explicit, is a mixture of pop and R&B, and discusses themes of love, sorrow, and romance. It debuting at number three on the Billboard 200 and was certified triple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. Four singles were released for the album; Secret, Take a Bow, Bedtime Story, and Human Nature. It was nominated for Best Pop Album at the 38th Grammy Awards. Today, the album has sold five-million copies worldwide. Bedtime Stories Q&A.
Perhaps she wanted to offer a more optimistic take on sex than the distant Erotica. Either way, Bedtime Stories is a warm album, with deep, gently pulsating grooves; the album's title isn't totally tongue-in-cheek. The best songs on the album ("Secret," "Inside of Me," "Sanctuary," "Bedtime Story," "Take a Bow") slowly work their melodies into the subconscious as the bass pulses. In that sense, it does offer an antidote to Erotica, which was filled with deep but cold grooves.
To that end, Bedtime Stories is lyrically and musically a much warmer album. She sacrifices some bawdy entendres (compare Erotica's "Where Life Begins" to Bedtime's "Inside of Me") and focuses on autobiographical matter. Instead of Erotica's chilly, pounding dance pop, Bedtime puts Madonna in softer sonic territory. The inviting R&B sound of Bedtime Stories is due in part to co-producer Dallas Austin, who longtime Madonna backup singer Donna de Lory describes as "part of her tribe at that time. Also on board were co-producers Nellee Hooper, Dave "Jam" Hall (hot off Mary J. Blige's debut, What's the 411?) and, of course, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds.
Hot Saki & Bedtime Stories is the fourth and final studio album by American alternative rock band Catherine. It was released on September 17, 1996 through TVT Records. D'arcy Wretzky of The Smashing Pumpkins, drummer Kerry Brown's wife at the time, contributed vocals on the record. The song "Four Leaf Clover" was released as a single, and another song, "Whisper," was contributed to the soundtrack of the film Scream.
