Like 1998's Rhythm-al-ism, Balance & Options is yet another star-filled joint for DJ Quik. Featuring appearances from AMD, Erick Sermon, Skaboobie, James DeBarge, the long-lost Digital Underground, and Raphael, Quik comes correct with tracks like "U Ain't Fresh" and "Do Watcha Want.

Quik continues the musicality from Rhythm-al-ism on this Balance & Options album. He combines sparse tracks like Do I Love Her? with lush string-filled productions such as Well. While he moved on from his beef with MC Eiht, DJ Quik took some subliminal shots at Dr. Dre on U Ain’t Fresh! He also pays homage to a couple of his fallen musical influences, flipping fellow Compton native Eazy-E’s song Eazy-er Said Than Dunn and recording a talkbox tribute to the recently deceased Roger Troutman on Roger’s Groove. Quik was also using this album as a showcase for Compton rapper Mausberg, who is featured on four of the album’s 20 songs. While the duo was working on Mausberg’s debut album, Non-Fiction, he was killed on July 4, 2000, two months after the release of this album.

As DJ Quik began to work on his third album, he started working with Suge Knight again. Their relationship dates back to 1988, before he sought refuge with a major label. He was signed to Suge's independent label Funky Enough Records in 1988. The arrangement proved to be short lived. That year, saw the release of rapper Mausberg's album, and DJ Quik's Balance & Options. Also production with Whitney Houston, Erick Sermon, 8Ball & MJG, Xzibit and AMG. After the lackluster sales of only 400,000 units of his fifth album, he was dropped by Arista Records, which had bought Profile Records.
