El Perro Del Mar - Kokoro album FLAC
El Perro Del Mar (literally "The Dog of the Sea" in Spanish) is a musical project that was founded in December 2003 in Gothenburg, Sweden. The sole member of El Perro Del Mar, Sarah Assbring, initially started as an MP3/CD-R artist and released her first songs through Hybris Records. Her music could originally have been described as melancholic indie pop, but in recent years she is noted for being a "chameleon" with "every visual, sound, costume, and so on painstakenly thought out" for consecutive albums.
She was able to record many of them for later use as samples and inspiration on her fifth album, KoKoro. After taking her sound in a house and R&B direction on her previous record, 2013's Pale Fire, this time out Assbring wraps her brightly melancholy melodies in a jangling, worldly layer of sound that includes African rhythms, Middle Eastern drums, Asian woodwinds and strings, and rumbling bass provided by a duo of Swedish bassists. She avoids charges of cultural appropriation thanks to the mishmash of sounds and clashes of cultures that occur throughout the album, often jamming the.
KoKoro, the latest album by El Perro Del Mar, takes its title from the Japanese word meaning heart or feeling, and from there you get a hint of what’s to come on: new musical terrain informed by an exotic Far East sensibility, couched in familiar El Perro Del Mar territory of melancholy and vulnerability. Almost 12 years into her career as El Perro Del Mar, founder Sarah Assbring’s appetite for reinvention remains strong
KoKoro" leans towards the latter, possessing some semblance of the jangling sounds of her eastern influences, but mostly just adding itself to the great list of expansive, soaring pop records that El Perro Del Mar seems to churn out with ease. The album takes its title from the Japanese word for feeling, and its not hard to imagine how the same feeling motivates the title track. KoKoro" is a soundtrack for new adventures in snowy mountains and magnificent sunsets
Gothenburg chanteuse Sarah Assbring, aka El Perro del Mar (Spanish for ‘the dog of the sea’) has been chipping away at the coalface of pop for more than a decade now, and while her endeavours have not been without merit, nothing could have quite prepared us for the musical magnitude of KoKoro. Predecessor Pale Fire, named after the Nabokov novel, traded in the safe 60s inspired pop she’d been peddling for a good while for a more experimental palette, but it was still daubing in watercolours. On the new album, her fifth, she has graduated to popmaster status, Queen of all she surveys. Where PJ Harvey writes a new album with a new musical instrument she was previously unfamiliar with, here we have a whole ensemble of them. Thankfully KoKoro - which apparently means the heart of things in Japanese - is pure pop alchemy.
Kokoro is absolutely worth a listen, and El Perro Del Mar is absolutely one to watch. The female Swedish pop artist forays into world music, with Chinese zither, various Asian flutes, Arabic strings and dulcimer. The frequently introspective songs are not overly complex lyrically, but the appeal is the fascinating soundscapes generated in the keyboard and drum-heavy music.
