The Symphony No. 100 in G major, Hoboken I/100, is the eighth of the twelve London symphonies written by Joseph Haydn and completed in 1793 or 1794. It is popularly known as the Military Symphony. The nickname "Military" derives from the second movement (and the end of the finale), which features prominent fanfares written for C-trumpets and percussion effects.

Haydn: Symphony in D, . N. 3 - 2. Largo cantabile. Haydn: Symphony in D, . 96 & 97 : Van Beinum, Concertgebouw (1952). The Concertgebouw's "keening" woodwinds and "tangy" strings must be heard to be believed. Everything works at perfectly judicious tempi, and every detail bristles with disciplined life and affection. No. 94, the "Surprise" and 100, the Military, show Haydn's ability to compose richly but not take himself or his patrons too seriously. The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra plays with skill and charm (even that horn player who's a bit flat in the Allegretto of the 100th), and Davis directs well (though I think Bernstein's conducting of the 100th had more swagger). Last but by no means least, the quality of the Phillips recording is excellent; clean and well engineered, with no studio boominess shading everything.
