Expert musicians’ beliefs, understandings and processes in improvised music-making were investigated revealing strategies gained from practice, training and experience. This paper explores the way expert musicians in the field of improvisation negotiate facets of development in their practice. Through the phenomenological lens of enculturation, practice and performance, five elite improvisers were interviewed about ongoing learning perspectives involving practice and experience.
