The New Don Ellis Band Featuring Patti Allen - The New Don Ellis Band Goes Underground album FLAC

The New Don Ellis Band Goes Underground. The New Don Ellis Band Goes Underground is an album by Don Ellis recorded in 1969 and released on the Columbia label. On All About Jazz, Jim Santella said "this big band album from Don Ellis proved inspirational.

Maybe when they named this The New Don Ellis Band Goes Underground, they were aiming for airplay on underground FM radio, emerging when this came out in 1969. But even that does not make sense. A lot of these tracks would have fit on AM. This is the least "underground" of Don Ellis' albums. But really, NOT a problem. Underground" is basically a soul record, and a great one at that. You have a Blood Sweat and Tears cover, a Harry Nelson cover, and a Laura Nyro cover  . Ellis may not have really gone underground here, but I love him above ground just fine. Just saw her singing blues on youtube in 2015 show. Looks and sounds great.

After two years, Don Ellis left the Army band and moved to Greenwich Village in New York City. He was able to get some work, but mainly with dance bands and other local work. He toured briefly with bandleader Charlie Barnet and joined the Maynard Ferguson band in spring of 1959. A later recording of Austin's piece, featuring Ellis, bassist Barre Phillips, drummer Joe Cocuzzo, and the New York Philharmonic (directed by Bernstein) was released on an album entitled Leonard Bernstein Conducts Music Of Our Time (1965)  . However, Don Ellis is probably best remembered for his work as a big band leader. His orchestra, which was active from 1966-78, achieved enormous popular appeal at a time when the influence of big band music was noticeably fading. Ellis's significance lies in his use of groundbreaking musical techniques and devices, new to the world of jazz. Ellis's innovations include the use of electronic instruments, electronic sound-altering devices, experiments with quartertones, and the infusion of 20th-century classical music devices into the jazz idiom  .
