Backhaus was one of the great exponents of the Classical and Romantic repertory and his performances had an integrity that eschewed any unnecessary display and flamboyance; his concern was to give the most direct interpretation of what the composer wishes and the structure and architecture of his chosen repertory was paramount. Backhaus recorded extensively for Decca throughout the 1950s and 1960s and recorded works by Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Mozart, and Schumann
At 11 he was already appearing in Berlin. In the intervening years Arrau had grown into a child of Chile , such a shining example of talent in eyes of all his countrymen, event that age, that the boy received a long-term state scholarship not from some music college or conservatoire but, quite uniquely, from the Chilean Parliament. Did Backhaus have the same consummate expertise in Debussy as he had in Beethoven ? Or Edwin Fischer in Liszt as well as Brahms ? Only Arrau was completely qualified to perform the whole range of piano music to the highest standards throughout; as a quick change artist at the piano, he is unrivalled by anyone on his artistic level.

Backhaus continued to record, this time for Decca, and now his recordings were issued on LP. One of the first things he embarked on was a project to record all thirty-two of Beethoven’s piano sonatas. After completing this, he recorded them again in stereo, but at the time of his death he had recorded only thirty-one, so the stereo version is not quite complete. He also recorded much of his core repertoire again: both Brahms’s concertos, all of Beethoven’s except No. 1, and some Schumann, Schubert and Mozart.
Wilhelm Backhaus: Decca Beethoven Sonatas. Ludwig van Beethoven. Plays Beethoven: Sonatas & Variations & The Complete Concertos. Stephen Kovacevich once said, "Wilhelm Backhaus was the only pianist who really understood Beethoven. I can go along with that. It is true that Backhaus is inclined to relatively fast tempi.
