A tribute to my father Casey Kasem. 15 June 2014 ·. Mike Kasem. Early this Father’s Day morning, our dad Casey Kasem passed away surrounded by family and friends fering, we are heartbroken. Thank you for all your love, support and prayers.

The loss of casey kasem. It was tragic t o have lost my first radio idol, Casey Kasem on June 15, 2014. I’ve been listening to Casey as far back as 1978 (when I was only 10). It was in 1979 that I began recording these charts as you see them now and followed them religiously until 1989. In addition to the famous American Top 40 (radio program) and America’s Top 10 (TV program), as a child, he was also Robin on the animated version of Batman & Robin, and, most notably, Shaggy, from the Scooby Doo series (among many other cartoons I grew up listening to). Casey was the reason I got into radio in the first place, he was also the reason I got into doing countdown shows and was responsible for my love for these charts and all they represent.

When Casey Kasem launched "American Top 40" in 1970, it was an era when AM and FM radio were sharply divided in audience and genre, and black musicians still couldn't hear their music on most radio stations. By using a trade publication's mathematical rankings, Casey Kasem helped democratize music across race and genre and exposed thousands of Americans to songs and artists they never would have heard otherwise. Rich Appel is a writer for Billboard and a professor of radio studies at Seton Hall University in New Jersey.

American Top 40," which Kasem created with producer Don Bustany, premiered July 4, 1970 on a radio network of just seven stations. Modeled after the 1940s program "Your Hit Parade," it eventually aired on more than 1,000 stations, including 400 on the Armed Forces Radio Network. Based on Billboard magazine's most popular singles from the previous week, the show featured the disc jockey's biographical storytelling and listeners' long-distance, often heart-tugging dedications, read on the air by Kasem. Kasem later said he knew the single-song format would win out over album radio. But his program's longevity may have been due as much to his own regular-guy appeal as to the music he played, some observers said. Kasem has "always transcended industry trends," Time magazine said when the deejay stepped down in 2009.
