In Pursuit Of The 13th Note. Welcome To The Story (A Good Mix). Galliano were a London based "acid jazz" group, formed in 1988, who were the first signing to Eddie Piller and Gilles Peterson's Acid Jazz Records. The original members were Rob Gallagher (vocals), Constatine Weir (vocals), and Crispin Robinson (percussion). Other important members include Valerie Etienne, who participated in the recording of all their CDs, along with other musicians such as Mick Talbot on keyboards and McKone Hernias on bass guitar. The band fused elements of soul, funk, hip hop and jazz.
John Galliano struck out on his own into the frozen wastes of Russian-Balkan folklore for Fall. A micro-bubble snowstorm was falling on the runway, and a trick of laser lighting created a magical illusion that the models were walking in some fairy-tale tunnel far, far removed from the brutish realities of humankind's current worries. Toward the end, the show moved into more traditional Galliano territory with a sequence of spun-silver bias-cut dresses that had all the delicate romance his fans adore. Technically, it was faultlessly accomplished and-for anyone put off by the blanket of black that has fallen over many of the collections-offered some of the season's few opportunities to pick up color.
Find out more about John Galliano, the (in)famous British designer who's made his name in Parisian haute couture, and what makes his clothes so good. The first piece Galliano created at Dior was for Princess Diana to wear to the Christian Dior exhibition at the Met in New York in 1996. As breathtaking as the peacock blue dress was, critics chose to reserve judgement on the young designer’s suitability to his new post. His Spring/Summer 1997 show, a perfect blend of classic Dior themes and Masai motifs, stunned and delighted. Excitement and fun had been returned to haute couture.
