The Contemporary Jazz Quintet - Actions 1966 • 67 album FLAC
Contemporary Jazz Quintet. To further narrow the scope, consider that same question limited to the 1960s; the number could be counted on one hand. Here is an album by the Contemporary Jazz Quintet, a group that indeed had a full-time musical saw player in its number, and as novel and downright goofy as the idea of "jazz saw" sounds, nobody on this date is goofin'. The lone album released by the Quintet (Hugh Steinmetz on trumpet, Franz Beckerlee on alto sax, Steffen Andersen on bass, Bo Thrige Andersen on drums, and Niels Harrit on - yes - musical saw) was simply titled TCJQ. It was an early experiment.
The Contemporary Jazz Quintet-Hugh Steinmentz, trumpet; Franz Beckerlee, alto saxophone; Niels Harrit, saw; Steffen Andersen, bass; Bo Thrige Andersen, drums-was a noisy free-jazz group active during the 1960s and in thrall of the era’s Albert Ayler-inspired zeitgeist. Actions 1966-67 is a reissue of the Danish quintet’s first album. It’s notable mostly for the unintentionally comic use of the musical saw, which sounds like a Theremin with a smaller tessitura and a stunted capacity for expression. On most of the five freely improvised tracks, the saw dominates-even dictates-the group sound.

Recorded in 1966 and 67, the five pieces that comprise this album serve as an indicator of what was brewing around the time, slightly before sax blower Peter Brötzmann defined the European free jazz sound by making his mark in 1968 with the ear splitting Machine Gun album. At this time the Quintet, comprised of bass, trumpet, alto sax, drums and saw (thats right, a singing saw), had been around for over seven years, in various forms, and were reeling from developments theyd heard in innovators like Sun Ra, Ornette Coleman and Albert Ayler
