This interest has manifested in reflections on digital media and shifting methods of distribution-see the 32-hour 2012 release Soulnessless, the world’s longest album in history & world’s first full-length mp3 album -as well as in personal business practices. Since 1993, Thaemlitz has released the bulk of her music on his own label, Comatonse, and keeps tight control over how it circulates online. With the exception of remixes, her music has not.

Terre Thaemlitz Soil (LP, Instinct, 1995). The first half decade of Thaemlitz’s recording career is firmly wedded to electroacoustic and ambient practice. Her 1994 debut Tranquilizer, released on the ambient offshoot of NY dance label Instinct, is an auspicious start, managing a fairly successful balance between the wistful (‘ 040468’, reminiscent of Autechre’s contemporaneous Amber) and the wilful (‘2am on a Silo’ – think Hacker Farm covering Steve Roach). Marketed as the world’s longest album in history, the 2012 release arrives on a 16GB microSDHC card. Much in the same way that the 80-minute capacity of the CD has come to dictate the length of an album, Soulnessless is an attempt to produce the first ever MP3 album – a release that makes use of the 4GB maximum capacity of an MP3 file.

Terre Thaemlitz has done a lot - he's started his own label, Comatonse, and done many different genres of music (he's typically most known for his more Electronica and Ambient stuff (that's typically where he's binned. arrangements of songs by different artists (the three that are out now are of Kraftwerk, Gary Numan/Tubeway Army and DEVO)

This album is an artifact of the post-rave ambient era typified by groups like the Orb, filled with evocative synth washes mixed with sounds of nature and bits of tribal percussion. It might sound a bit naïve to ears weaned on electronic music made with powerful computer software, but Tranquilizer is not without its charms, and it shows Thaemlitz' deft touch with mood and texture. Raw Through a Straw" is a simple, understated piece for organ that was featured on a very early Thaemlitz single
