The Caretaker is a long-running project by electronic musician James Leyland Kirby, who also records as V/Vm. His work under the Caretaker moniker has been characterised as exploring memory and the gradual deteoriation of it, nostalgia, and melancholia. Initially the project was inspired by the haunted ballroom scene in the 1980 film The Shining, with his first several releases consisting of treated and manipulated samples of '30s ballroom pop recordings.

Album's title: Sadly, The Future Is No Longer What It Was (Part One: When We Parted My Heart Wanted To Die).

Leyland Kirby has a prolific work ethic, and his latest releases are certainly evidence of that: a culling of material from his 20-hour long The Death of Rave album as V/Vm, and a three-hour album under his own name that closely resembles his work as the Caretaker. At the onset of 2006, the sound collagist Leyland Kirby started a project called VVMT365 that entailed releasing one new track every day for an entire year. He finished with 602, and this was in addition to three albums as V/Vm and one as the Caretaker. One of those albums, V/Vm's The Death of Rave, was 20 hours long.

Leyland Kirby's immense 2009 triple-album Sadly, The Future Is No Longer What It Was reimagined his music once again, as wind-whipped, piano-dappled ambient suites composed entirely by Kirby himself. Leyland Kirby - Remember Us by theQuietus. Was there a particular theme you wanted An Empty Bliss Beyond This World to have? JLK: More disintegration than the others. Parts are barely audible.

are these intentionally filled with surface noise? mine sounds like a collaboration with a bowl of rice krispies.

This isn't The Caretaker, and I'm pretty sure this is just a very poorly pressed record. This might be the most surface noise filled record in my whole collection - or mine was damaged somehow, I just want to know if it's worth it to buy another copy or if it will be just more of the same. edit - although some tracks do certainly sample dirty/scuffed records, I can still tell those apart from the record's own crackle.
Swift Summer
Yes. The composer uses old 78 rpm ballroom records and "ambient noise" as part of his compositions.
nadness
If someone asks you what is the definition of melancholy, play them a song from this record. pure loss in sound form.
Gaxaisvem
Nothing short of genius
