The Apollo Theater is a music hall located at 253 West 125th Street between Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard (formerly Seventh Avenue) and Frederick Douglass Boulevard (formerly Eighth Avenue) in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. It is a noted venue for African-American performers, and is the home of Showtime at the Apollo, a nationally syndicated television variety show which showcased new talent, from 1987 to 2008, encompassing 1,093 episodes; the show was rebooted in 2018. In 2007, gospel recording artist Byron Cage played at the Apollo for his album Live at the Apollo: The Proclamation.

It was the famous Apollo Theatre, home to many wonderful nights and memories for those lucky enough to have walked through its doors. Music promoter and writer Robert Fields said recently on TV that The Apollo was special, it wasn’t just a venue, it was a way of life as that was how it felt to the fans who gathered there. The album is included in Robert Christgau's "Basic Record Library" of 1950s and 1960s recordings, published in Christgau's Record Guide: Rock Albums of the Seventies (1981). In 2003, the album was ranked number 25 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time
