Reviews about Sonny Landreth - The Crazy Cajun Recordings (1):
elektron
I first heard Sonny Landreth on the "Hit-Kickers" compilation albums on Festival Records (2) from 1976. To my ears he was the stand-out artist of the series and I taped his contributions (I found 6 numbers at the time) along with an immortal song by Floyd Tillman called "She Loved Me". I have only just found this compilation, released by Edsel Records in 1999, featuring all of the tunes I knew plus loads more. [I would place his acoustic blues slide playing in the same sort of territory that Jimmy Page was trying to occupy in Led Zeppelin's acoustic material which is why it appealed to me so much. Fans of Zeppelin's acoustic side may enjoy Sonny Landreth's music.] PS Having heard the CD a few times now I estimate that only 7 songs are from 1977. These are tracks 8, 11 to 13 and 16 to 18. PPS On reflection the comparison with Jimmy Page that I made originally is quite meaningless. Sonny plays phenomenal fiery bottleneck blues alongside some brilliant acoustic instrumentals. Well worth checking out.
