I’ve been anticipating this release for over a year now, probably more like five, ever since Britta’s solo show at Milkboy in Philadelphia with The Figgs backing her up, where she laid down a sensational evening of covers and original material.

Luck or Magic is the half-originals, half-covers solo debut of Britta Phillips, a veteran of indie rock bands such as Ultrababyfat, Luna, and Dean & Britta, the latter two with her husband Dean Wareham. Phillips began working on the album in 2012 with electronic DJ Scott Hardkiss, but set it aside when the '90s rave pioneer died suddenly the following year. She later regrouped to finish the album with producer Eric Broucek (LCD Soundsystem, Eleanor Friedberger), along with producer/drummer Roger Brogan (Alison's Halo, Spectrum) and Wareham, who appears on six of the tracks.

Luck Or Magic is very much a classic Californian album, full of sun-dappled mellow vibes, references to the storied tradition of LA chamber pop stretching from Brian Wilson to Jon Brion, and a smooth sound handed down from the Fleetwood Mac era. Her cover of Evie Sands’s 1969 One Fine Summer Morning, with its hand drums, burbling bass, and pleasantly stoned mood, is enough to make you feel like you’ve wandered into a late-night party at a ’70s rock star’s Laurel Canyon crash pad-a long way off from the grimy urban energy that haloed her New York material.
