Various - The Fiddlers Of Cape Breton album FLAC
The Cape Breton Connection. With a culture deeply influenced by 19th century Scottish emigration, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, is widely celebrated for its fiddle music. Profoundly rooted in old Scottish tradition, the music is increasingly moving to center stage in the contemporary Celtic revival, as seen in the popularity of Cape Breton fiddlers Natalie MacMaster and Ashley MacIsaac. This CD features some of the best known and most admired Cape Breton fiddlers, with piano and guitar accompaniment in the island's distinct style

Cape Breton fiddling is a regional violin style which falls within the Celtic music idiom. Cape Breton Island's fiddle music was brought to North America by Scottish immigrants during the Highland Clearances. These Scottish immigrants were primarily from Gaelic-speaking regions in the Scottish Highlands and the Outer Hebrides. Although fiddling has changed considerably since this time in Scotland, it is widely held that the tradition of Scottish fiddle music has been better preserved in Cape Breton.

Cape Breton fiddlers use a number of "classical" techniques including vibrato and shifting to higher positions (in spite of the bent wrist). The bulk of the older repertoire is Highland Scottish. Many of the oldest tunes are played in AEAE tuning. Listening to the current crop of Cape Breton fiddlers will give a somewhat distorted impression of the tradition, because of the current fad of playing Irish tunes. The older repertoire was almost entirely Highland. Note the foot-stomping that a lot of Cape Breton fiddlers, and pipers, do (the pipers often play seated so as to stomp).

Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia is almost not an isle at al. It was all rock’n’roll and Top 40 around the world. People everywhere thought fiddlers were old folks playing jigs and reels, strathspeys, square dance stuff. Kids wouldn’t go near a violin. But there were keepers of the flame here. If you visit Cape Breton, it’s easy to check current listings and create your own musical path across the island. The choices are generous. There’s an old story about a newcomer asking directions to an out-of-the-way ceilidh that evening.
