Dave Warner’s From the Suburbs first major appearance was at the Octagon Theatre, Perth on October 15, 1976. It featured not only the songs but small staged vignettes. Johnny Leopard (John Ryan) and Terry Serio (The Elks) who had both trained as actors were able to give Warner the breadth he wanted. Warner felt it was his best album since Mugs Game. Though a single, Kookaburra Girl was a hit in WA and Tasmania, the album failed to gain airplay and was panned by the musical cognescenti. When Warner developed a serious respiratory infection he decided he’d had enough of playing in smoky pubs and beating his head against a wall. He returned to WA and began work on a variety of projects that included the rock musical Planet Pres, big theatrical pub shows like The Sensational Sixties, and radio comedy with Leopard, Damien O’Doherty and Cathy Jennings.
