Tchaikovsky • Shostakovich : Midori • Claudio Abbado • Berlin Philharmonic - Tchaikovsky & Shostakovich: Violin Concertos album FLAC

Conductor Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic join violinist Midori in two of the "biggest" Russian violin concertos, those of Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich. Midori's Tchaikovsky is fine, but holds no surprises. The Shostakovich, however, is a different matter - Midori performs this rather difficult work with a creamy, melting sensuality that is in sharp contrast to the usual manner of performance given by the work's dedicatee David Oistrakh, who pointed up its more angular and aggressive characteristics.

Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto in D Major, Shostakovich: Violin Concerto No. 1 ~ Midori. Tchaikovsky & Shostakovich: Violin Concertos.

Claudio Abbado, Midori, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Exclusive Prime pricing. Dimitri Shostakovich wrote his 1st Violin Concerto in a-minor in 1947/48 and was completeing it during the infamous Zhandov Decrees of 1948, in which some Soviet artists, amongst them, Shostakovich were condemned for formalism and other "anti-revolutionary tendencies," whatever those were. I sometimes think the authorities simply made these accusations up as they rolled along, not having any real co-ordinated and cohesive policy on what was and what was not allowable.

Midori (violin); Berlin PO/Claudio Abbado. Midori isn’t the first student of veteran pedagogue Dorothy DeLay to tackle Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. DeLay’s Juilliard clones sound alarmingly similar, and few cast any novel insights on this warhorse of a concerto. Hear just a bar or two played by Heifetz, Elman, Huberman or Oistrakh, and you’ll realise that Viennese critic Eduard Hanslick’s infamous jibe about music which ‘stinks in the ear’ were never deserved.
