Bruce Springsteen's musical bread and butter is the blue collar everyman song, so it's no surprise that his biggest musical influences include folk singers like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. The Ghost of Tom Joad, from the album of the same name, is an homage to those folk singers and to writer John Steinbeck, whose novel The Grapes of Wrath, gave the song its title character. American Skin (41 Shots) is a rare non-album single from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Originally released in a live version to promote his Live in New York City album, American Skin tells the story of the shooting of Amadou Diallo by the NYPD and, in doing so, shines a light on racial profiling in the criminal justice system. Over the years it has remained a topical piece, rediscovered by new fans after each new controversial shooting.
