Isobel Campbell - Milkwhite Sheets album FLAC
It's looking less likely that Isobel Campbell would ever have accompanied her former group, Belle and Sebastian, on such a conspicuously good-news jaunt as this year's The Life Pursuit. Not even nine months later, Milkwhite Sheets again shows Campbell to be not so much twee as fey- there's a difference, people. On a collection of original and traditional songs, the winsome singer/songwriter strides through the peat-bogged haints and misty moors of British folk music, armed with an acoustic guitar and her trademark cello. Unfortunately, her girlish voice is drab beside Anne Briggs' mournful peal or the dewy, honey-throated quirks of Shirley Collins- English folk icons whose doctrinal styles Campbell approximates here, with less breathtaking results

Instead of the showy country balladry she and Lanegan laid down, here Campbell delves deep into the sounds of 1960s British folk. In the liner notes she comes right out and says that Milk White Sheets was inspired by the music of female folk giants Shirley Collins, Jean Ritchie, and Anne Briggs. It's no stretch to say that Campbell has created an album that stands shoulder to shoulder with anything her idols released. Everything about Milk White Sheets is enchanting and lovely.

This time, Campbell revamps half a dozen English and Scottish traditional folk songs, her delicate vocals seeming to linger beneath the lush tones and orchestral arrangements she fancies, balancing the soothing cadence that flows through her original numbers. The instrumentation seldom goes beyond an acoustic guitar and cello (though guests include ex-Smashing Pumpkin James Iha and ex-Vaseline Eugene Kelly), often inducing memories of Nick Drake ("James," "Are You Going to Leave Me") and Astrud Gilberto ("Reynardine"), with the a capella "Loving Hannah".
