Pacific Ocean Blue is nearly as good as everyone has always said it was. And the poignancy of Wilson's life and death further enforces its status as a critical holy grail. It even may be worthy of the quantity of chin that has been stroked to it over the years. Released in 1977, it was the first ever Beach Boy solo album, and much to the chagrin of Mike Love in particular, it became the sort of artistic success that the group themselves hadn't enjoyed for a long while. Written and recorded in fits and starts since the mid-70s, Wilson took his brother Brian's painstaking approach, but came to the studio as a non-musician, with boundless possibilities that had to offer.

Pacific Ocean Blue, however, is a wonderful study in Beach Boys surfer soul imbued with the expressiveness of Dennis' piano style.

Dennis Wilson was the only Beach Boy that actually surfed. He was also the most naturally charismatic and fun-loving, though by the mid-1970s his non-stop party lifestyle was beginning to take a heavy toll. The drummer was in his early 30s, but looked ten years older, and years of drinking and drug abuse added significant gravel to his once pristine singing voice. But with his brother Brian largely out of commission, he began contributing his own material to Beach Boys albums. Recording took two years, and by 1977 he was finally ready to unveil the haunting Pacific Ocean Blue. Haunting tracks like "Farewell My Friend" and "River Song" reflect his fragile state and reveal just how far he'd grown as a composer and lyricist. Work started on a follow-up but Wilson's drug abuse was spinning out of control and it remained unfinished when he drowned in 1983.

Pacific Ocean Blue is the debut album by American songwriter-musician Dennis Wilson, co-founder of the Beach Boys, and the only one to be released in his lifetime. When released in August 1977, it was warmly received critically, and noted for outselling the Beach Boys' contemporary efforts. Background and recording. After several attempts, starting in 1970, to realize his own project, some of which made it to the finished album, Wilson recorded the bulk of Pacific Ocean Blue in the months spanning the fall of 1976 to the following spring, at the Beach Boys' own Brother Studios

The instrumental version of Holy Man for me is so much better than the Taylor Hawkins version, although he did a fantastic job, he's no Dennis Wilson. Dennis Wilson shocked everyone when he released his solo album in 1977. He'd always been the sexy, funny Beach Boy. Rarely did he take lead vocals, and his writing was even later in developing.

Pacific Ocean Blue is Dennis Wilson's only complete solo effort released to the public and we're pleased to offer it in audiophile quality! 180 gram audiophile vinyl. His first hit came in 1965 when "Do You Wanna Dance" opened the The Beach Boys Today! album and cracked the Top 20. After the high peaks and deep valleys of the Beach Boys career during the late '60s, Dennis began writing songs ("Little Bird", "Be Still") for 1968's Friends. Throughout the early '70s, Beach Boys fans counted on at least two Dennis songs on each LP, often tender ballads. He made his first attempt at a solo album as early as 1970, but quietly released only one single.
