In addition to all of the hits and the occasional jazz performances, the misses (and the many Ray Eberle vocals) are also on this set, so general collectors just wanting a taste of Miller's music would be better off getting a less expensive greatest-hits set. However, true Glenn Miller fans should consider this remarkable reissue to be essential; it's all here.

Glenn Miller and His Orchestra was an American swing dance band formed by Glenn Miller in 1938. Arranged around a clarinet and tenor saxophone playing melody, and three other saxophones playing harmony, the band became the most popular and commercially successful dance orchestra of the Swing era and one of the greatest singles charting acts of the 20th century.

1937 – Glenn organized his own touring band and signed to Brunswick records. 1938 – The group was unsuccessful, and was disbanded. 1939 – The Orchestra played at the Glen Island Casino, NY, a major swing venue, and was heard on radio. 17 Top 10 hits including ‘Sunrise Serenade’; ‘Moonlight Serenade’; ‘Wishing (Will Make It So)’. 1941 – Another 11 Top 10 hits: The band made the movie, Sun Valley Serenade, introducing ‘Chattanooga Choo Choo’, soon a million seller. hits: ‘Song of the Volga Boatmen’, ‘You and I’, ‘Elmer’s Tune’. 1942 – 11 Top 10 hits and 3rd year as the top recording artist with ‘American Patrol’, ‘A String of Pearls’, ‘Moonlight Cocktail’, ‘Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree (With Anyone Else but Me)’ and (I’ve Got a Gal) In Kalamazoo’ which came from Miller’s second film, ‘Orchestra Wives.

Glen Miller produced a unique sound with reliance on clarinet amongst saxophones to create a smoother sound, and he had become one of the best-selling recording artists from 1939 to 1942 when at the peak of his civilian career he joined the US Forces to entertain the troops. It is easy to dismiss & of' collections as cynical marketing ploys but this CD has clearly been carefully constructed to display the full range of the Glen Miller sound with a selection embracing well-known numbers. Only & the A-Train' seems to be missing, and perhaps & Louis Blues'.
