Bedřich Smetana (2 March 1824 - 12 May 1884) was a Czech composer, one of his nation's most significant. He is best known for his symphonic poem Vltava - Die Moldau, the second in a cycle of six which he entitled Má vlast ("My Homeland"), and for his opera Prodaná nevěsta ("The Bartered Bride"). Smetana was the son of a brewer in Litomyšl in Bohemia.

While it is often presented as a single work in six movements and – with the exception of Vltava – is almost always recorded that way, the six pieces were conceived as individual works

But it's certainly a reasonable choice; not every orchestra of Smetana's time boasted the behemoth proportions of the full symphonies that perform Má Vlast today. Hrusa also tampers with the string writing in a few places to ensure greater clarity. The upshot is a cycle that is more transparent than the usual readings of this work, although not really lighter; the orchestra still makes plenty of noise. The album was recorded live, in the acoustically superior Rudolfinium, and Supraphon's engineers deliver superior live sound. The orchestra earned a lengthy ovation that is probably rare for this work that in Czech lands is pure musical comfort food.

Released November 5, 1882. Considered the ultimate expression of Smetana’s Czech musical nationalism, the set is now played every May (on the anniversary of Smetana’s death) to open the Prague Spring International Music Festival. Writers Bedřich Smetana. More Bedřich Smetana albums.
