Beverly Sills (May 25, 1929 – July 2, 2007) was an American operatic soprano whose peak career was between the 1950s and 1970s. Although she sang a repertoire from Handel and Mozart to Puccini, Massenet and Verdi, she was known for her performances in coloratura soprano roles in live opera and recordings. Sills was largely associated with the operas of Donizetti, of which she performed and recorded many roles

Scenes and Arias from French Opera. Scenes and Arias from French Opera. Jules Émile Frédéric Massenet (May 12, 1842 – August 13, 1912) was a French composer from Montaud, France, who was best known for his operas. His compositions were very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and he ranks as one of the greatest melodists of his era. Soon after his death, Massenet's style went out of fashion, and many of his operas fell into almost total oblivion. Apart from Manon and Werther, his works were rarely performed. However, since the mid-1970s, many operas of his such as Thaïs and Esclarmonde have undergone periodic revivals

This album's program showcases him in repertoire that he has been making his own on stages such as the Met, Covent Garden and the Bavarian State Opera: opera in French that demands a thrilling heroism in both voice and style - and a top register of outstanding brilliance, since the album offers a grand total of 19 top C's.

Natalie Dessay in this album continues to delight and astound us by her superb performance of French operatic arias. The apparent ease with which she executes some of the most difficult and complex coloratura passages conceals the rigorous background of training and discipline which is the foundation of her artistry. Dessay brings all her gifts to a climax with a marvelous performance of the Ophélie's Mad and Death Scenes from 'Hamlet' by Ambroise Thomas. This version of the Mad Scene is even better than her previous rendition on her last recital of French arias. This is a highly emotional interpretation where all the brilliant scales and cadenzas reflect the changing moods of Ophelie's madness and her despair as well as her innocence.

A Beverly Sills Concert, Angel. Scenes and Arias from French Opera, Angel. Welcome to Vienna, Angel. Sills ’ s parents had a small collection of opera recordings and the budding diva memorized the arias in phonetic Italian before she was seven. Her mother decided to give her private lessons with Estelle Liebling, one of New York ’ s premier voice teachers. Liebling was impressed with the youngster ’ s innate ability and encouraged her to pursue more radio work.

Héroïque: French Opera Arias. PKF – Prague Philharmonia, Czech Philharmonic Choir of Brno, Emmanuel Villaume. The imaginatively conceived programme showcases his prowess in arias to French texts by Verdi and Rossini, by Berlioz, Meyerbeer, Gounod and Massenet, and by three composers whose works are rarely heard today: Reyer, Bruneau and Rabaud. On stage, Hymel has gone from Don José in Carmen to Enée in Berlioz’s Les Troyens, the title role in Meyerbeer’s Robert le Diable, Henri in Verdi’s Les Vêpres siciliennes and Arnold in Rossini’s Guillaume Tell.
