Georg Friedrich Händel, Stephen Simon , Vienna Volksoper Orchestra - Ariodante (Opera In Three Acts) album FLAC
George Friedrich Handel's opera, Ariodante, is a Dramma per musica in three acts after the libretto by Antonio Salvi after the story of The Frenzy of Orlando by Ludovico Ariosto. Apart from a few isolated episodes, the main theme of Ariosto's story is the struggle of the Christians against the heathen. One of these episodes, Ariodante and Ginevra, serves as the theme for Handel's opera.

Georg Friedrich Händel, Ariodante. Dramma per musica in three acts, HWV 33 (1734) Libretto by an anonymous author after Antonio Salvi’s Libretto Ginevra, principessa di Scozia (1708) after Ludovico Ariosto’s epic poem Orlando furioso (cantos IV-VI). Revival Sung in Italian with German and English surtitles. At the start of Handel’s Ariodante is a scene more normally found in the closing moments of a Baroque opera: a happy ending. All seems to be going well. Ariodante wants to marry Ginevra, the daughter of the king of Scotland. The king agrees and accepts his daughter’s choice. The opera could end when the curtain comes down on this opening act. What ensues instead is a drama about envy and mistrust, about a quest for power and about betrayal.

Georg Friedrich Händel. A tale of jealousy and intrigue, conflict and betrayal: Ariodante, Handel's first work for the then brand-new Theatre Royal in Covent Garden. At this time, the composer was highly caught up in rivalry, bankrupt and stricken by disease. However, rejuvenated by a retreat, he wrote a work based on Ariosts Epos' Orlando furioso. And he succeeded in creating a richly varied and colourful score - including the intimate Aria "Scherza infida" - still regarded today as a particular gem amongst Handel's compositions .
