Haydn had already composed Symphony No. 99 and portions of 100 and 101 (the latter nicknamed Clock by London audiences) for a new season of 12 concerts in the Hanover Square Rooms, where an expert orchestra now included clarinets. He and Salomon co-conducted - from the harpsichord and the concertmaster's chair, respectively. Today, this symphony, with the exception of the slow movement, sounds exuberant, even buoyant, with characteristic flashes of humor. Yet Haydn quite seriously evoked war, as he did several years later in the Masses In tempore belli and In angustiis (aka "Lord Nelson"), and as Beethoven did thereafter in Fidelio, in the "Agnus Dei" of his Missa solemnis, and in the finale of the Ninth Symphony.

Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 45 in F♯ minor, known as the "Farewell" Symphony (German: Abschieds-Symphonie; modern orthography: German: Abschiedssinfonie), is a symphony dated 1772 on the autograph score. A typical performance of the symphony lasts around twenty-five minutes. The tale of how the symphony was composed was told by Haydn in old age to his biographers Albert Christoph Dies and Georg August Griesinger. 44 in E minor, Hoboken I/44, was completed in 1772 by Joseph Haydn. It is popularly known as Trauer (English: Mourning). An apocryphal story relates that Haydn asked for the slow movement of this symphony to be played at his funeral. The work is in four movements and is scored for two oboes, bassoon, two horns (in E and G), continuo (harpsichord) and strings: Allegro con brio, 44. Menuetto e Trio (Trio in E major): Allegretto, 34. Adagio in E major, 24. Finale: Presto, 22.
