Reviews about Julie Andrews - Star! (1):
The remastering done on this was a very amateurish effort (even though the original release was recorded with a deliberate, 1940s "lo-fi" quaint effect by-way-of the Fox sound engineers and never sounded as good as it deserved to). Budget bureaucracy prevented (the late Fox and Warner's sndtrk. archivist) Nick Redman from renewing musicians' user fees to thus be able to bring the masters back into print....so, they cobbled this reissue together from half of a LP transfer and half of the consumer pre-recorded reel to reel tape left from 1968 (an old 20th employee -acting as an advisor on Redman's project- dug out from his garage!).Funny thing is: the parts taken from THAT tape (which, back in the '60s, was the best audio format there was: reel to reel)...COME THROUGH THE CLEAREST I'VE EVER HEARD THESE SONGS; while, the tracks transferred from a needledrop: ARE SO NO-NOISED-TO-DEATH and loaded with bass eq that, the inconsistency in sound is drastic (the way they tried to hide the fact it was from two, different sources).I wished they'd just used the entire 1968 Ampex store-bought reel to reel to do the whole thing...who cares if it may have had more background hiss(?).
