The diction of the lusty choristers from the Deutschen Oper Berlin is blurry, and the boomy sound stage around the small orchestra is like a canyon. but I wonder how comfortable Karajan felt with the music itself. For a more emotional statement of the Symphony of Psalms, there is a magnificent Karel Ancerl recording on Supraphon though its 1964 on-Curtain sound quality is perhaps not so palatable for the modern ear, something with which Karajan's DG recording has no a problem.

Bach: Magnificat; 3 Motets. Berliner Philharmoniker, Herbert von Karajan, Hanns-Martin Schneidt.

Herbert von Karajan’s first performance with the Berliner Philharmoniker in April 1938 was a sensation – and aroused the jealousy of principal conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler, who from then on considered the young star his rival. Furtwängler died in 1954, and the direction of an America tour the year thereafter that had already been planned devolved to Karajan. After successful completion of the tour, Karajan was appointed principal conductor in 1956
