Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion is a 1944 triptych painted by the Irish-born British artist Francis Bacon. The canvasses are based on the Eumenides-or Furies-of Aeschylus's Oresteia, and depict three writhing anthropomorphic creatures set against a flat burnt orange background. It was executed in oil paint and pastel on Sundeala fibre board and completed within two weeks.
Toth: Re-bought this on a whim recently having not heard it in years (I still own my original copy, but hell if I can locate it), and I was surprised by how well the Coleman side of this split 12-inch, in particular, holds up. Ferocious blasts of chaotic proto-power violence that would make Arthur Janov proud, grinded out by a trio of righteously raging Boston crusties. So few of these old hardcore records hold up, but this one does in a pretty huge way. I bet Magik Markers dig this record. Video after the jump.
The Crucifixion appeared in Bacon’s work as early as 1933. Even though he was an avowedly irreligious man, Bacon viewed the Crucifixion as a magnificent armature from which to suspend all types of feeling and sensation. It provided the artist with a predetermined format on which to inscribe his own interpretive renderings, allowing him to evade narrative content-he disdained painting as illustration-and to concentrate, instead, on emotional and perceptual evocation. That Bacon saw a connection between the brutality of slaughterhouses and the Crucifixion is particularly evident in the Guggenheim’s paintings. The crucified figure slithering down the cross in the right panel, a form derived from the sinuous body of Christ in Cimabue’s renowned 13th-century Crucifixion, is splayed open like the butchered carcass of an animal. Slabs of meat in the left panel corroborate this reading.

Bacon produced a number of works inspired by the Crucifixion since his early paintings Crucifixion and Crucifixion with Skull (both 1933).
