Tyrannosaurus Hives is the third full-length album by The Hives, released on 20 July 2004. It is their first album since Veni Vidi Vicious from 2000, and also their first original release on a major label. If the front cover of the album is removed from the case and lined up with the back, one can see that there is an extra pair of legs, hinting at Randy Fitzsimmons' existence.
Two years later, Tyrannosaurus Hives arrives, and proves that the band isn't just a fossil from the days when everyone (or critics, at least) thought that the Hives and the other bands lumped in with the rock revival were going to change the face of pop music. It may have taken the Hives awhile to follow up Veni Vidi Vicious, but they didn't waste any time: Tyrannosaurus Hives is half an hour of highly compressed, high-contrast rock that is far and away the band's best album. While recording the album, the Hives mentioned that they were especially inspired by Kraftwerk. Even though nothing here sounds like "Pocket Calculator" and the band hasn't forsaken its black-and-white dress code for Teutonic black and red, that band's influence is indeed all over Tyrannosaurus Hives, most literally on the breakup lament "Love in Plaster," which borrows a motorik beat and squiggly keyboards.

The Hives-Tyrannosaurus Hives. During the garage rock explosion of nearly 3 years ago happened, The Hives were one of the main bands caught in the hype. Now this was fine for them, whatever brought the money in for the band playing the music they love would make them happy. But they never once classed themselves with any of these other bands, simply because, they werenâ¬"t. In fact if you were to say to them that they were thought of as â¬Üanother garage rock fad bandâ¬" then they would be surprised and reply with more attitude than a fox â¬Üreally"!â¬" So for the band.
