To describe Armand Schaubroeck as over the top hardly does him justice. This incredible g oddball began his musical career in the mid-'60s, after a prison stay (he was convicted of grand larceny). Although his subsequent livelihood has resulted from a well-known music store he owns and operates in upstate New York, he has found time to make a large oeuvre of albums and singles that spring from his bitterness and cynicism.

Although his music remains an obscure oddity, it's hard to stand indifferent before the attractive strangeness of his album covers. When interviewed in 1992, Schaubroeck explained that when he recorded those LP's, he really wanted "to get it out real bad," but now with a shop doing annual sales in excess of 7 million dollars he seems to have lost the craving to record his own brand of inspired bile. But before we start rambling about the soothing effects of money, let's get back to where it all began.
Experimental band, founded January 31, 1963, in Rochester, NY, and was initially made up of brothers Armand Schaubroeck (guitar, vocals), Bruce Schaubroeck (drums), and Blaine Schaubroeck (bass).
Armand Schaubroeck, on the other hand, is a convicted criminal, so the rat with a knife through its throat on the front cover, dripping blood on Schaubroeck’s hand, is totally believable. Ratfucker, the title track, is the best Lou Reed song Reed never wrote, but there is no doubt this is spawned from the former leader of the Velvet Underground’s work. I only mention this because there are backing vocals on all but one track off the 1978 album Ratfucker. And I cannot imagine anyone even being remotely bored singing along to the seedy fucked up insanity that is Armand Schaubroeck Steals. The LP is arguably the pinnacle of Armand Schaubroeck Steals’ short lived career before retiring to run a famous vintage guitar store (House of Guitars) in Rochester with his brother.
